GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The rematch between rivals Davenport and Cornerstone went to the road team for the second time this season as the ninth-ranked Golden Eagles defeated the top-ranked Panthers 78-68 in front of a packed house at DU Student Center for Senior Day.
Dominez Burnett,
Jason Jordan,
Wayne Bradford and
Connor Heminger were recognized during pre-game and that seems to carry Burnett in the first half as he scored 27 points of his team's 36 points. Cornerstone used a 19-10 run in the final 6:56 of the half to take a nine-point lead into the locker room. Cory Cox scored 11 points during the run including three triples for Cornerstone.
CU scored the first five points of the second half on a basket by Kyle Steigenga and a triple by Ben Lanning. Steigenga and Lanning both scored again on back-to-back trips forcing a Davenport timeout down 53-38 with 15:36 remaining. The Golden Eagles built their lead to 69-49 after another Cox three-pointer with 9:53 to play. Davenport responded and Cornerstone struggled at the free throw line allowing the game to get close in the final minutes.
The Panthers got it down to 73-65 with 2:20 left on a dunk by
John McCloud. Travis Wells turned it over and DU had a chance to really put pressure on CU. Jordan drove the lane and missed a shot and Cox hit a jumper to make it 75-65 with 1:14 to play. CU had a good shooting night behind the arc going 11-of-27. Cox finished with 25 points and connected on 6-of-13 from deep. Steigenga scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Burnett scored just five points in the second half to finish with 32 points. It was his ninth 30-point game of the season and he also recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds.
Kevin Rich scored 12 points on 5-of-11 from the floor in 37 minutes.
Nick Gamble scored nine points and grabbed four boards in 33 minutes. The DU guards had an off-night combining to shoot 7-of-30 (23.3%) from the floor. DU shot 36.4 percent for the game and were just 5-of-22 behind the arc. DU wraps up the regular season at 26-4, 20-2 in the WHAC and have the top-seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament which starts Wednesday, Feb. 24 at home.
