Panthers Sweep Second Day in Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla. - DU continued to dominate in the circle Sunday afternoon as they took a pair of one-run games as they took their third game in a row and advanced their 2016 record to 5-2.

DU opened their second day double-header with a 4-3 win over Saint Thomas University. The Panthers opened a 3-0 lead over the Bobcats in the third inning when Aby Brambila hit a line drive home run to center field that scored Alyssa Eastman, and gave starting pitcher Emily Maves the insurance runs she needed. The Panthers would then manufacture a run in the fourth as Haley Obetts started the inning with a double, and Carli SanMillan sacrificed her to third base. Sarah Schneidenbach would earn the RBI as her ground ball to the second baseman scored Obetts and the Panthers led 4-0.

Emily Maves (3-1) would secure the win in the circle with a complete game and seven strikeouts. The Bobcats cut the DU to 4-1 in the sixth as a Panther error allowed an unearned St. Thomas run. STU would then make a comeback attempt in the seventh inning as they scored a pair of runs to cut the DU lead to 4-3. The Bobcats opened the inning with a double, but Maves responded by retiring the next two batters. STU then put two runs across the plate on a two-run home run to center field. Maves would walk the next batter to put the tying run on base, but she forced a fly out from the next STU batter as DU took the game.

The Panthers then earned a 2-1 victory in their second game behind the shutdown performance of freshman pitcher Mallory Teunissen. She pitched a complete game with a career-high 13 strike outs. Point Park scored first with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Panthers would respond immediately with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Brambila got the inning started with a one-out RBI down the left field line. Beth Stroup then followed with a double to right center, and SanMillan tied the game with a RBI single to left field. SanMillan stole second and advanced to third on a ground out to third by Obetts before Schneidenbach knocked in the game-winning RBI on a ground out to second base. Teunissen (2-0) took the victory in the circle by only allowing four hits and one run.
