POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The Davenport men's basketball season continues into the NAIA quarterfinals after a second round 80-68 win over No. 15 Warner Pacific on Friday afternoon at Keeter Gymnasium. The Panthers (31-4) will await the winner of Cal Maritime/Warner (Fla.) and will be making their fifth appearance in the national quarterfinals. The frontcourt for Davenport came to play as
Dominez Burnett,
Kevin Rich and
John McCloud all had double-doubles in points and rebounds. Burnett finished with 22 points and 11 boards. He had his eighth double-double of the season and scored 20 or more points for the seventh straight game. Rich had his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 boards. He also scored his most points in a game in the last 12 games. McCloud got his second double-double in as many games in the tournament with 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also had a career-high four steals and a pair of blocked shots in 38 minutes.
Davenport shot 43.1 percent for the game (28-of-65) but will need to work on their three-point shooting (3-of-21) and free throw shooting (21-of-32) heading into the next round. The DU defense was stifling all game as Warner Pacific followed a 106-point performance in the first round win over Nebraska Wesleyan with 68 points and 32.8 percent shooting (22-of-67) against the Panthers. Collin Malcolm led all players with 15 rebounds and scored eight points for WPC. Four players were in double figures in scoring for the Knights led by Franky Johnson's 14 off the bench. WPC coughed it up 16 times as did the Panthers.
Nick Gamble did not score in the first round win over Saint Xavier (Ill.) but tossed in 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting in 26 minutes.
Wayne Bradford was the fifth player in double figures with 10 points (all in the second half) and also had six boards. The DU starters scored 75-of-80 points in the contest.
Davenport scored the game's first four points and had an 11-2 run to start the contest at the 14:36 mark. The Panthers continued to lead 22-13 with 7:10 left in the half on a Rich jumper. Warner Pacific trailed 26-16 minutes later but then went on a 10-0 run to tie the game with 3:34 left in the half. The Panthers ended the half on a 15-5 run and led 41-30 at halftime.
The advantage grew to 17 points at 51-34 four minutes into the second half. Warner Pacific cut the lead down to 10 as the Panthers went 6:18 without a point. Burnett split at the free throw line to end the drought and McCloud made a field goal at the 5:11 mark ending an eight-plus minute drought without a field goal. The defense kept the lead as Warner Pacific got no closer than eight points in the second half.
