CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Panthers saw a matchup with No. 8 Campbellsville University Saturday afternoon as they travelled for a double header with the Tigers. DU took down Campbellsville in their 2016 opener, 2-1, but Saturday saw the Tigers earn the sweep over DU by 3-1 and 3-0 final counts.
The Tigers took the 1-0 lead after the first inning as a DU error allowed Campbellsville to have runners on second and third. Campbellsville advanced the runner home on a sacrifice squeeze and DU trailed early on the unearned run. The Tigers would push their lead to 3-0 in the third inning as a one-out single with the runners on second and third drove in the pair and put DU in a three-run hole. The Panther offense came alive in the seventh inning as they took advantage of a Tiger error that allowed
Carli SanMillan to reach second base and
Haley Obetts to advance to third base.
Sarah Schneidenbach then drove in SanMillan by pushing a ground ball to the right side of the infield and DU cut their deficit to 3-1.
Aby Brambila would go 1-for-2 for the game with two walks and
Nicole Vitale went 1-for-3. Junior pitcher
Emily Maves (8-3) took the decision in the circle with a complete game, five strikeouts, and two earned runs allowed.
Game two saw the Panthers fall behind early as the Tigers hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. Campbellsville would add to their lead with two more solo home runs as they pulled ahead to a 3-0 lead after five innings. The Panthers would struggle to get their offense going and fight back into the game as they spread five hits over the game. DU would see their chance to cut into the Tiger lead in their final at bat as
Nicole Vitale and
Lauren French hit back-to-back singles. The Panthers were not able to find the clutch hit that could get DU on the scoreboard as they fell to 15-6 on the season after the 3-0 loss.
SanMillan went 1-for-3 from the leadoff spot and
Alyssa Eastman went 1-for-3 as the cleanup hitter. French and
McKenzie Rowe each recorded 1-for-2 games at the plate. Freshman pitcher
Mallory Teunissen (6-2) took the decision in the circle for DU by tossing a complete game and allowing three earned runs.Â
