Panthers Pick Up Wins over Strong Opponents

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Panthers traveled to southern Ohio last Saturday to take on two solid women's programs, DII Cincinnati Kelts and DI Detroit RFC. The night before the game was a snowstorm, spanning from Grand Rapids all the way through to the Kelt's home pitch, which made conditions on the pitch cold, wet and muddy. Davenport didn't let that stop them, as they started out strong versus the home team in the first game of 15's.

Danielle Ordway got the scoring started, which helped build some momentum for the rest of the squad. They were able to shake off some of the cold after this, as Caren Meerman powered through less than 10 minutes later, making the score 10-0 in favor of the Panthers. The home team wouldn't go down without a fight though, and notched a score in the corner right before halftime was called. The second half was all Davenport, as they saw Hunter Moreland, Veronica Overbeek and Ordway touch the ball down for trys while Hannah Tennant went 2/3 for conversions, battling some fierce winds.
DU - 29 Cinci - 5

After resting and watching Cinci take on the Detroit Women's team, Davenport took the pitch again to face Detroit. Detroit was loose, warmed up and ready to go, which proved to be the advantage in the first half. Davenport got off to a slow start, allowing three Detroit scores within seven minutes. The Panthers were a bit sluggish and were down a player due to a injury but kept on pushing. Their defense became more and more aggressive, which lead to turnovers and more offensive possessions. Ashlee Byrge, who was playing scrumhalf instead of her normal position at center, was the first Panther to score. It came off of a dummy to the flyhalf, which left the middle of the field wide open. The snow and mud continued to be a factor for both sides, who slipped and slid all over the pitch, trying to hold onto the slippery rugby ball to retain possession. Detroit stole a ruck deep in their own territory and were pressing up strongly, when Ordway read the defense perfectly and intercepted a pass from the Detroit backline. She ran it in from 35 meters out for the score right up the middle, making it 15-14 at the half.

The Panthers got off to a quick start again at the half and were able to take the lead off of a penalty kick from Ordway. She continued to play a vital role on both sides of the ball by playing great defense and scoring again in the second half. Davenport was able to come back from 15 points down, scoring 24 straight points while allowing no points after the first few scores. Hannah Tennant was 3/3 for conversions in the second match.
