GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – DU cruised in the opening game of their double header Sunday afternoon with Siena Heights. The Panthers earned an 8-2 victory behind the play of junior pitcher
Emily Maves as she totaled eight strikeouts to advance her 2016 record to 15-3. The Saints then came back in game two with an eight-run fifth to hand the Panthers an 8-7 loss.
The Panthers used a three-run second inning to take over the lead in game one, and broke open the game with a three-run fourth. DU saw their seniors step up as
Alyssa Koziol stole home for the first run of the game.
Carli SanMillan sparked the three-run fourth inning with a single to right center that scored
Sarah Schneidenbach. SanMillan and Schneidenbach each recorded a double in the game as a part of team effort of four extra-base knocks. Maves shut the Saints down from the circle as she tossed the complete game with eight strikeouts.
DU looked to take the sweep of Siena in game two as they opened a 5-0 lead after four innings. Koziol hit a single through the left side of the infield that drove in
McKenzie Rowe as DU took the 1-0 lead after one inning. The Panthers then used a two-run third to add to their lead as SanMillan and
Aby Brambila each recorded RBI hits.
DU carried this lead to the fifth inning where the Saints offense capitalized on Panther miscues to score eight runs and take over the lead, 8-5. The Panthers recorded a pair of errors and Siena recorded seven hits to take over the lead. The DU offense responded immediately in the bottom of the inning with two runs to bring the game to a 8-7 score.
Alyssa Eastman doubled in Brambila and
Lindsay Tasma recorded a triple that scored
Sarah Wallick. The Panther offense would stall of there as they stranded the game-tying run on third base in the fifth inning and on second base in the seventh to fall to the Saints, 8-7.
Mallory Teunissen (11-4) took the decision in the circle with three earned runs allowed in 4.1 innings pitched. Maves relieved Teunissen in the fifth and pitched 2.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts.
