Panthers Split at Concordia to Begin Weekend Series

DU shutout for just second time this season by Jon Targus in game one

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team split with Concordia on Saturday dropping game one 4-0 and winning game two 5-1. Jon Targus shutout the Panthers for just the second time this season in a complete-game gem. He tossed nine innings and allowed three hits with three walks and two strikeouts improving to 4-3. Corey Murphy gave up one earned run in eight innings and struck out nine in his first loss of the season (7-1).

The Cardinals scored once in the third, twice in the seventh and one more time in the eighth. Jeremy Maas and Marshall Oetting each had a RBI and Blaine Milhelm went 1-for-3 with a run and double. Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle, Connor Seymour and Jeremy Vasquez each had a single for Davenport.

The Panthers turned it around in game two improving to 32-10 overall and 19-3 in the WHAC. Davenport is now a game and a half ahead of Madonna in first place in the WHAC with the Crusaders riding a 10-game win streak. Blake Kuszmaul took the loss for Concordia allowing four earned runs and five hits in 4.2 innings. Bryan Saucedo got the start for Davenport but lasted just two innings. He continues to fight his control with five walks but did strike out four and allowed one hit. Caleb Leach got the win in relief (4-0) allowing one run with two strikeouts. Alex Schuiling tossed 3.1 innings and allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Larkin-Guilfoyle hit a one-out solo home run in the top of the second, his second home run of the season. The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the second after Vasquez laid down a bunt for a RBI and on an error scored again. The Cardinals scored once in the fourth but DU got that back and another in the top of the fifth. Travis Bolin had a RBI single and Matt Priebe followed with another RBI single.
