GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's volleyball team simply could not close out Cornerstone on Wednesday evening in a 3-2 loss to the Golden Eagles in their home and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener. The Panthers (3-6, 0-1) dropped the first set despite having a 21-17 lead as Cornerstone scored the final eight points of the set. Davenport then responded with a 27-25 win in the second set. With the score tied at 22,
Krissy Dill had a kill followed by another kill from
Ashley VanderHorst. The Golden Eagles scored the next two points to tie it at 24 and then VanderHorst had back-to-back kills for a 26-25 lead. Madison Herrema had an attack error to give DU the set.
Cornerstone jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set before Davenport turned it around for a 13-9 lead after a kill by
Charlie Smith. DU kept their momentum for the rest of the set and won 25-17. The fourth set saw the teams tied at 9-9 but Cornerstone opened up a little room at 17-13 after a kill by Kendra Zwart. Hope Leppink had a kill to get to set point and then served the set point as VanderHorst had an attack error.
The fifth set looked good for Davenport as they switched sides up 8-4. CU chipped away down 11-6 and scored nine of the last 10 points to win 15-12. Leppink served the final four points of the match and it ended on a block by Maria Ma and Zwart. The Cornerstone front line held a 14-3 edge in total blocks. Zwart had 10 block assists and 10 kills. Dill led Davenport with 18 kills and also had 15 digs. VanderHorst tallied 14 kills and eight digs.
Carly Nichols had 11 kills and five digs. Smith recorded 10 kills (.240 attack percentage) and four digs.
Kasey Stehouwer led the team with 33 digs and had five assists.
Sydney Tracer had a good all-around match with 55 assists, seven kills and 13 digs.
