Epic Comeback Falls Just Short at Northwood

DU was looking for first GLIAC win and were down 21-0 at one point before forcing 2 OT

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Davenport football team went to double overtime for the second week in a row, but could not come out on the winning end this time in a 33-30 setback at Northwood. Down 21-0 early in the third quarter, Davenport put tremendous pressure on the Timberwolves and clawed back into the game.

Northwood got a five-yard rushing touchdown by Vashon Nutt early in the second quarter to open the scoring. Joe Garbarino upped the lead to 14-0 with 3:33 left in the second quarter on a nine-yard run. Andre Carter scored from seven yards out with 12:10 left in the third quarter and it was 21-0.

Davenport showed fortitude by not giving in and took over the ball with 8:20 left in the third quarter. DU marched 52 yards in eight plays as Haiden Majewski scored on a four-yard run with 4:53 left in the quarter. The Timberwolves answered with a score on their next drive as David Riser booted a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth.

Keion Powers put the team in great field position as he took the ensuing kickoff 58 yards to the NU 39. Majewski connected with Nate Couturier on a five-yard touchdown on the fourth play of the drive to make it 24-14 with 12:07 left. The defense forced a 3-and-out giving it back to the offense at the DU 8. DU drove all 92 yards in 11 plays aided by a 27-yard catch by William Gist to get the ball near midfield. Majewski kept for a six-yard score with 4:13 left and it was now 24-20.

Brian Williams picked off two passes in the first quarter and snagged his third at a big moment in the shadow of his own goal post. He intercepted TJ Schepperly at the DU 11 and returned it 42 yards to the NU 47. The three interceptions proved to be a school record. The Panthers drove toward the end zone and were faced with 4th-and-4 at the NU 19. After a timeout, Majewski completed a five-yard pass to Couturier to keep the drive alive. Majewski then tossed a 14-yard touchdown to Daronte Powers giving DU a 27-24 lead with 26 seconds to go.

Northwood had little time but did not panic returning the kickoff to the NU 43. Garbarino completed a 20-yard pass to Travis Vuich down to the DU 37 and called a timeout. They gained 10 yards through the air on their next two plays and got out of bounds to save time. Garbarino found Alex Spicuzzi for four yards and called another timeout. Riser then kicked a 41-yard field goal to send it into overtime at 27 apiece.

Northwood got the ball first in overtime and settled for a 34-yard Riser field goal. DU matched it as Jerred McGuire made a 40-yarder. The Panthers got the ball first in the second overtime and drove to the six-yard line, but Majewski was intercepted by Dimitri Abro in the end zone. NU needed just a field goal placed it in the right spot after three plays and Riser made his fourth field goal of the day, this time from 36 yards for the 33-30 final.

"This team continues to grow every week," said head coach Sparky McEwen. "I'm proud of the steps being made during this tough season. We had our chance to win, but the small things make the biggest difference in winning and losing. We are committed to doing things the right way. Northwood has a really good team and it is well coached."

Majewski completed 16-of-28 passes for 126 yards and two scores. He also rushed 21 times for 68 yards and two more scores. Garbarino rushed for 103 yards and one score on 20 carries and completed 6-of-10 passes for 48 yards. Williams added six solo tackles and two tackles for loss to his three picks. Jon Simmons and Arnell Anderson led the team with seven tackles.
