Davenport suffers 68-87 setback against William Jewell College in season opener

WESTVILLE, Ind. – The Panthers started their season off down in Indiana to compete in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover Classic, hosted by Purdue University-Northwest. Davenport took on GLVC opponent William Jewell College tonight and suffered a double digit loss to the Cardinals. The Panthers were led in scoring and rebounding by senior Nick Malonga.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening three minutes of the game both teams traded a couple buckets until the game was tied 6-6 with 17:03 left in the half. Both teams went on a scoring drought over the next 3:31. William Jewell ended the drought and proceeded to go on a 25-8 run over the next seven minutes. Over that seven-minute stretch Davenport went 4/13 from the floor. The Panthers finished the half on a good note, cutting the lead down to eight points after a layup by Delano Smith with less than a second on the game clock.
 
Davenport continued their strong play in the beginning of the second half. Following a John McCloud Jr. jumped DU only trailed by six points. After McCloud's bucket the Cardinals went on a 19-5 run to bring their lead up to 20 points. The big run gave the Cardinals a lead that they held for the remainder of the half. Davenport was unable to bring the deficit down to within single digits in the second half.
 
Malonga led the Panthers in scoring with 16 points and rebounds with seven. Braima Hai had three assists and chipped in 13 points on 6/10 shooting from the field. The Cardinals went 17/20 from the charity stripe compared to 5/9 for the Panthers.

Davenport gets a chance to even their record at 1-1 when taking on Rockhurst tomorrow. The game will tipoff at 2:00 p.m. ET (1 pm CT) back in the James B. Dworkin Student Services and Activities Complex.
