Women’s Hoops collects first GLIAC win at Tiffin

DU won 58-53 behind Jenna Falkenberg’s sixth career double-double

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Davenport women's basketball team made a little history on Thursday (Dec. 7) with a 58-53 win at Tiffin. The Panthers (2-6, 1-2) earned their first-ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win and also set a season-best by holding the Dragons to 53 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-It did not seem like the Panthers were headed to their first GLIAC win after scoring just four points in the first quarter and trailed by seven. DU went 2-of-12 from the floor in the quarter.
-The second quarter was a complete opposite as Davenport shot 9-of-14 from the floor and tied the game at 24 with 20 points in the quarter. The Panthers took their first lead of the game at 24-23 with 1:20 left in the second quarter on a basket by Hannah Wilkerson.
-The Dragons came out strong in the third quarter and went on an 11-4 run in 3:41 as Victoria Burdo scored eight points including a pair of three-pointers. The Panthers responded with a 13-3 run of their own to take a 41-38 lead with 51 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
-Tiffin held a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter but DU scored the first five points of the final quarter as Emily Severn made a three-pointer and Kelsey Crockett added a bucket. The Panthers and Dragons were tied at 46 with 6:48 left to play when DU scored eight of the next 11 points to lead 54-49 with 2:29 remaining. Amanda Merz and Martyna Pioro each made a pair of free throws with under 38 seconds on the clock to preserve the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX
-Falkenberg went 8-of-12 from the floor and finished with her first double-double of the season and sixth of her career. She scored a season-high 16 points and blocked a season-high four shots. Her 11 rebounds gave her a double-double with eight of those on the offensive glass.
-Severn scored 11 points and made three triples. She grabbed seven rebounds and dished out a season-high three assists in 38 minutes.
-Pioro set a career-high with four made free throws and scored 12 points off the bench in 20 minutes.
-Taylor Smith tied her career-high with eight points going 3-of-4 from the floor in 11 minutes.
-Rylie Stiles tied her career-high with three rebounds in nine minutes.
-Davenport shot a season-high 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the floor and were 9-of-15 at the foul line. 14 of those free throws came in the second half.
-Jensen Hiegel led the Dragons with 15 points including 3-of-4 behind the arc. Madison Jackson added 10 points.

COACHES CORNER
-"It was not the prettiest win but it feels rewarding," said head coach Rick Albro. "We certainly do not make it easy on ourselves. We slowed down in the second half and did a much better job of taking care of the basketball."

UP NEXT
-The next contest will be a major test as the Panthers travel to #1 Ashland (9-0, 3-0 GLIAC). The first meeting between the teams will be Saturday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. from Kates Gymnasium. The Eagles are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions and have won 46 consecutive games.
