BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The rain out on Saturday led to a doubleheader on Sunday for the Davenport baseball team at Union College (Ky.). The Panthers dropped game one of the weekend series but bounced back today with a pair of wins against the Bulldogs. DU won 7-2 in game one and followed that by taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning with two outs in a 1-0 win.
Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle belted a two-run homer in the second inning of game one to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Oscar Heredia increased the lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the third inning.
Brian Sobieski then scored on an error later in the third for a 4-1 lead. Union scored once in the bottom of the third to cut the lead in half at 4-2. Sobieski launched a homer to center in the sixth to make it 5-2.
Jake Bozzo came off the bench to pinch hit in the eighth and delivered a two-RBI single to center for the final runs.
Grant Wolfram got the start tossing four innings with four strikeouts.
Caleb Leach (1-0) threw 2.1 innings in relief and allowed just one hit and no runs.
Jonathan Cheshire earned the save throwing 2.1 innings and allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Sobieski drew three walks and scored three times.
Nolan Page went 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot.
The Panthers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning in game two as Heredia lifted a sacrifice fly to left center with the bases loaded.
Jeremy Vasquez had two of Davenport's three hits and stole a base.
Andrew Click and Cheshire combined to throw a gem as Union collected their only hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. J.C. Pena broke up the no-hitter with a bloop single to left center and then stole second base before a groundout ended the game.
Click improved to 3-1 this season throwing four innings and striking out seven. He flirted with trouble allowing six walks (one intentional) before handing the ball to Cheshire. He saved the second game going three innings with no walks and three strikeouts.
