CHICAGO, Ill. - The Davenport baseball team traveled to the Windy City for a non-conference game against Saint Xavier on Tuesday. DU built a 4-2 lead after six innings but the Cougars scored twice in the seventh and once in the ninth for a comeback 5-4 win over the Panthers.
The Cougars used a committee of pitchers (eight total) while the Panthers went with
Andrew Click for 6.2 innings in a no-decision. Click allowed five hits and three earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. He kept the ball low as the Cougars recorded 15 groundouts.
Jonathan Cheshire entered with two outs in the seventh when Saint Xavier tied the game on a two-run single by Garrett Bright. DU did not threaten in the eighth and ninth setting up the final at-bat. Cheshire gave up a leadoff double and intentionally walked a batter to setup a force. A wild pitch moved both runners over a bag and then another intentional walk loaded the bases. Alex Neufeld then singled to shortstop for the winning RBI.
Andrew Figueroa set a season-high with four hits in five at-bats and scored a run.
Brian Sobieski went 2-for-3 with a two-RBI single in the fourth inning.
Jeremy Vasquez also went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
Jimmy Filipski also had a run and RBI.
Nolan Page and
Cameron Bair also collected a double at the plate.
