Panthers sweep conference doubleheader against Cornerstone University

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport opened up their conference schedule with a strong showing by sweeping Cornerstone University in a doubleheader. The Panthers got a 2-0 win during game one and poured it on in game two with an 8-0 win. Both pitchers for DU went all seven innings on their own and neither gave up any runs. Davenport is ranked number seven in the NAIA National Poll and continue to build a resume to move up in the rankings.

The Panthers got off to a quick start with two runs in the first period off of one hit and two errors by Cornerstone. The first inning proved to be the game winning inning for Davenport as they were held scoreless during the other six innings. Rowe got things started with a walk, next Aby Brambila reach on an error and Rowe advance to third. Flores singled through the left side that scored Rowe, while Brambila advanced to third. Eastman reached on an error by the short stop and Brambila scored. Maves only gave up two hits the entire game and struck out six Golden Eagles to earn win number 11 on the year.

Davenport got it going offensively during the second game scoring eight runs on their nine hits. The Panthers drove in six runs during the fourth inning to blow the game wide open. Brambila had the big play of the inning with a double to left center that scored Rowe, French and Pauley. Eastman topped the game off with a solo home run shot in the top of the seventh to give DU the eight run lead. Teunissen faced 26 batters during the seven innings and only gave up four hits while striking out five batters.

UP NEXT
The Panthers will play a doubleheader against conference opponent Aquinas College on Saturday. The games are slated to be played at Aquinas with start times of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
