GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The weather conditions were ideal for a ton of runs on Saturday and the Panthers did not disappoint in a pair of wins over Marygrove. Davenport took game one 11-0 and then tied a school record in the 31-1 game two win. Both games were mercy rule contests that lasted seven innings and were scheduled for nine.
Game two saw DU also tie a school record with 28 hits. Both runs and hits record tied the mark set on April 25, 2012 against Alma. The 31 RBI collected by the Panthers did set a school record. The team's five triples in the nightcap were second most in a game.
Jake Bozzo collected seven RBI which was two short of the school record and tied for second in a game.
The Panthers struggled to score on Friday in a 4-1 win over the Mustangs but wasted no time with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth in game one. They added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to run-rule the Mustangs. Chris Nelson allowed eight of those runs as the starter for Marygrove and fell to 1-6 this season. Krystien Johnson-Batillana went all seven innings for Davenport and allowed three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in the shutout.
Andrew Figueroa had a streak of 10 straight times reaching base snapped in game two. He was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in game one.
Aaron Fadden got a start in right field and batted ninth. He finished 2-for-3 with his first home run of the season and collected three RBI.
Brian Sobieski hit his seventh home run this season and went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
Nolan Bryant batting second collected a pair of RBI's.
Bozzo pinch hit in the bottom of the 14-run second inning for the Panthers and finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and seven RBI's. He hit his first home run of the season to the deepest part of the park in center field and also had a double. In total, 16 different players had a hit in game two as the Panthers collected four doubles, five triples and three home runs. Sobieski had a pair of triples and drove in four runs before leaving the game.
Nolan Page went 2-for-2 with a double and three runs scored.
Jeremy Vasquez drove in four runs and smoked a pair of triples.
Matt Hoge hit his third double of the year and finished 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
Jimmy Filipski and
Luke Lalumia each hit their first homers of the season.
Jacob Buchberger collected his first hit of the season finishing 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Andrew Click improved to 5-2 this season going three innings and retiring all nine batters he faced.
Caleb Leach also threw a perfect inning before Marygrove broke up the perfect game in the fifth inning. The pitching staff struck out 13 batters of a possible 21 outs in game two.
