GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Junior
Brian Sobieski set the single season RBI record (64) at Davenport in game 2 on Saturday at Cornerstone as the Panthers took all three games in the series and ran their win streak against the Beltline rival to 15 straight. DU won 8-0 in game 1 and then took the nightcap 4-1 extending their win streak overall to 12 games (36-13, 24-6 WHAC).
GAME 1
The Panther pitching staff pitched their sixth shutout of the season and the offense broke up a tight game with five runs in the top of the sixth inning in the 8-0 win.
Andrew Click got the ball and flirted with danger during most of his 4.2 innings on the bump. Click stranded five runners in the first four innings and then two more in the fifth when
Jonathan Cheshire came in to get the final out and strand another pair of Golden Eagles. Click allowed six hits and two walks but more importantly no runs with four strikeouts in the no-decision. Cheshire improved to 8-3 going 2.1 innings of no-hit ball with two punchouts.
Justin Palmbos made just his second relief appearance and threw the final two stress-free innings and retired all six he faced with a strikeout.
Clay Keltner took the loss going 5.1 innings and gave up four earned runs for Cornerstone. The game was 2-0 when he exited in the sixth giving the ball to Nick Hill with two runners on base and one out.
Anthony DiPonio greeted Hill with a three-run jack to left on a 2-0 pitch for the 5-0 lead. Hill then gave up a double to
Jeremy Vasquez and hit
Matt Hoge on the first pitch he saw.
Nolan Page walked with two outs and
Andrew Figueroa drew a bases loaded walk on four pitches for the 6-0 lead.
Brian Sobieski was then hit by a pitch to tie the single season RBI record at Davenport with 62. Hill was replaced by Daniel Abbgy who got a strikeout to end the inning.
Jonny Abbadusky went 3-for-4 at the plate for Cornerstone recording half of their six hits as a team. Sobieski had his 15th double of the season and drove in two.
Jake Bozzo went 2-for-4 with a run scored. DiPonio finished 2-for-5 and his homer was the second of the season.
GAME 2
Davenport took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in the nightcap and then proceeded to add two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth. The Golden Eagles finally broke into the scoring column in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bozzo doubled in the second and took third on a wild pitch. DiPonio lined out to center which allowed Bozzo to score on the sacrifice fly.
DU added to their slim lead in the seventh as Hoge singled to start the inning.
Austin Petravicius doubled down the left field line and Hoge advanced to third. Two outs later it was Sobieski setting the single season RBI record with his 63rd and 64th on a double to left center. The record by
Travis Bolin stood less than a year.
Cheshire gave up the run in the seventh as he replaced
Krystien Johnson-Batillana who went six strong scoreless innings with no walks and eight strikeouts. Jon Stewart in the nine-hole doubled to start the inning and Brady Eeles singled him home. Eeles and Abbadusky each had a pair of hits for Cornerstone who scored just once on 10 hits. The Panthers got the run right back in the top of the eighth as Hoge had a RBI single scoring DiPonio with two outs. DU had 13 hits with 11 coming off starter Collin Young (4-3). Cheshire earned his eighth save of the season going three innings with three strikeouts. Johnson-Batillana improves to 7-2 on the season and tossed 83 pitches (59 strikes).
Davenport had one more WHAC series coming up next week against Concordia in Ann Arbor. The Panthers have a half-game lead (24-6) over the Cardinals (23-6) for second place in the league standings with the series counting for seeding in the WHAC Tournament after Northwestern Ohio wrapped up the regular season title this weekend with a three-game sweep of Marygrove.
