BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers started off their 2017 season going 1-1 against current NCAA Dll opponents. Davenport opened with a solid showing against the former regular Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) regular season champions, sweeping the Yellow Jackets 3-0. The team held their own against other Dll opponents and will face two more Dll teams tomorrow.
MATCH 1 (CEDARVILLE)
Final Score: Davenport 3, Cedarville 0
Location: Big Rapids, Mich.
Records: Davenport 1-0, Cedarville 0-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-SET SCORES: 25-13, 27-25, 25-23
-Davenport had a big momentum swing towards the beginning of the set when
Ashley VanderHorst served for four straight points to give DU a 13-7 lead.
-The first set was filled with similar runs,
Kasey Stehouwer served for three straight points and
Jenna Asper served for four straight points at the end of the set.
-The second set went into extra points after a comeback by DU. Davenport was down 21-17 and came back to win three straight points at the end to win 27-25.
-The third and final set had the Panthers jump out to a 17-7 lead early. The Yellow Jackets fought back and DU closed out the game successfully, winning by two points.
MATCH 2 (MISSOURI WESTERN)
Final Score: Davenport 0, Missouri Western 3
Location: Big Rapids, Mich.
Records: Davenport 1-1, Missouri Western 1-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-SET SCORES: 25-20, 26-24, 25-21
-The first set Missouri Western jumped out to a quick 11-4 win. The Panthers fought back towards the end of the set and cut the lead down to four points. The Griffons got a kill for their 25
th point to go up 1-0.
-Davenport amped it up during the second set, battling back and forth with the Griffons. The set came down to the wire and Missouri Western came away with the second set win.
-A couple late runs in the third set gave the Griffons momentum to finish off the game, winning the set 25-21.
UP NEXT
Davenport takes on two more NCAA Dll opponents in Northwest Missouri State and Upper Iowa tomorrow in the second day of the Ferris State Invitational.
