CLERMONT, Fla. – Davenport started off their NTC Spring Games schedule with a doubleheader against American International, a NCAA DII school out of Springfield, Massachusetts. The Panthers proved to be the dominant program over the two games, winning by a combined score of 15-1. Both pitchers for DU,
Mallory Teunissen and
Ellie Muilenburg, had stellar games on the mound. They gave up only one earned run between the two of them and struck out 13. The offense for the Panthers was just as solid, recording 17 hits and scoring 15 runs. Davenport improved to 4-1 on the season after the two wins.

Davenport generated their four runs during two innings, the second and fourth inning. In the second inning Allen was first on base by getting walked. Crawford was next up to bat and reached on a fielder's choice, while Allen got thrown out at second. On the next play Crawford advanced to second on a passed ball. Koza stepped up to the plate and singled to left field, Crawford scored and Koza then advance to third on the throw to home. Next up was Jewell, who tripled to left center, scoring Koza to give DU a 2-0 lead. The next scoring spree occurred in the fourth inning. Urban pinch ran for Allen after she singled to left field, then she advanced to second after Crawford singled to the shortstop. Shortly after Crawford advanced to second, Urban stole third and then Urban scored on a throwing error by the catcher. A couple plays later Jewell singled to third base and Crawford scored for the fourth DU run of the game.

Rylie Kalina scored in the second inning and then Pauley scored in the third inning to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead after three innings. Davenport opened the flood gates during the fourth inning, scoring six runs. Crawford scored the first run off a Jewell single to third base. Jewell went around the bases and scored later on in the inning off a Pauley single to second base, 4-0 DU lead. Flores stepped to the plate next with the bases loaded, she got hit by pitch and Rowe scored from third. Next to the plate was Allen and she singled to center field, scoring French. The final run of the inning was Flores who scored off a Crawford single through the left side. Davenport added three more runs in the fifth inning and innings six/seven were not played due to the lopsided score.
Coaches Corner
"I am very proud of our performance today," stated head coach
McCall Salmon. "It was great to be back outside on dirt! Our team responded well from a late travel day yesterday and two early morning games today. Offensively, we hit the ball hard, and our defense made key plays. Both M. Teunissen and Muilenburg had great command of their pitches!"

The Panthers play two more games on Sunday, Feb. 25. Davenport plays Gannon University at 9 a.m. and then Lake Erie College at 11:30 a.m. All the games for the NTC Spring Games are located in Clermont, Fla.
