Davenport earns two more wins at the NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. – Davenport played another two games in the morning in their second day down in Florida. This time around the Panthers faced two different opponents, Gannon University and Lake Erie College. The Panthers shut out Gannon for a 2-0 victory and in eight innings had a come from behind victory against the Storm of Lake Erie. Selene Pauley had a great day, she went only 1-5 but had two runs, one triple, one RBI, walked three times, had a sac hit, and stole three bases. The pitching was rock solid for the Panthers as well in both games, as DU saw Mallory Teunissen and Ellie Muilenburg each win their third game of the season.

Both of the runs for Davenport came in the top of the seventh inning. In addition to it being the top of the seventh inning the Panthers had two outs before they scored both runs. French, with two outs, got walked and she took first base. Pauley stepped to the plate, with French on first, and blasted a triple through the left side, scoring French on the play. Next up to the plate was Flore who doubled down the left field line and scored Pauley from third. Davenport scored the two runs with three batters in a matter of moments. Teunissen closed out the game like a pro, striking out two of the Gannon batters and getting the last one to ground out. She pitched a complete game shutout with a remarkable 10 strikeouts and no walks. Moreover, she only gave up four hits to the 24 batters she faced.

The second game of the day was also a tight game and went into extra innings to determine a winner. Davenport scored the first runs of the game in the bottom of the third. With Pauley on third and Kaline on second Flores doubled down the left field line to score both, giving DU a 2-0 lead. The Storm scored one run in both the fifth and sixth inning to tie the game. During the seventh inning neither team scored and the game went into extra innings. Lake Erie was first to bat in the eighth inning and scored one run, putting the pressure on Davenport to score one run or the game was over. Jewell started off the inning placed on second, this was done in extra innings to help teams score to determine a winner quicker. Griffin pinch hit for Alexis Koza and singled to center field, scoring Jewell. After Griffin's single Crawford stepped up to the plate and advanced Griffin to second on a sac hit. Koza subbed back in the game for Griffin at catcher and Muilenburg was walked. With Panthers on first and second French singled to third base, loading the bases for Pauley. Pauley stepped up and reach on a fielder's choice, Koza was thrown out at home. During the next batter the Storm threw a wild pitch and Muilenburg scored the walk off run. She also pitched all eight innings of the game for Davenport and gave up only one earned run.

Up Next
Davenport has another two games slated for Monday, Feb. 26. Davenport plays Kentucky Wesleyan at 10:30 am and then another game against Gannon at 1:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Legends Way Field #2.
