Davenport scores 43 bench points in important win over Ashland

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Panthers snapped their losing streak with a huge win over GLIAC South foe Ashland University. Davenport found themselves down 13-points in the first half before cutting that lead down to eight points heading into halftime. Ashland shot only 33.3% as a team in the second half and DU held the Eagles to 28 points in the half. Sophomore Robbie Bramhill was on fire from beyond the arc today, he went 6/10 from three and scored 24 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Davenport opened the game hitting their first three three-pointers from the field. Janeau Joubert hit the first, Nick Malonga hit the next, and then Joubert hit another one to give DU an 11-6 lead. Ashland went on a small run and took the lead 12-11. The Panthers and Eagles swapped points for a couple minutes before the game was tied 17-17 following a Zack Nieuwkoop layup. The Eagles went on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes of play. Bramhill went on a scoring burst down the stretch of the half, scoring 10 straight points for the Panthers. Davenport cut the Eagles lead down to eight points heading into halftime.
 
The Panthers started the second half on an 18-5 run over a seven-minute period. Momentum was shifted the Panthers way permanently when Bramhill hit a three in transition to tie the game 42-42, assisted by Delano Smith. The Eagles took a timeout after the basket to gather themselves. Bramhill hit yet another three on the next offensive possession to give Davenport a lead that they wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the game. With 10:32 left in the half Cameron Burns subbed in the game, 13 seconds later he hit a three ball to give DU a five-point lead. With under four minutes to play Bramhill and Smith hit back to back threes to build up a nine-point lead, Ashland took a timeout following the make by Smith. Davenport went 10/12 from the charity stripe down the stretch to close out the game successfully.
 
Bramhill led all scorers in the game with 24 points, he shot 6/10 from three and grabbed seven boards. Joubert added 13 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists, while Smith scored 11 and went a perfect 6/6 from the free throw line. John McCloud didn't score in the game, but snagged a team high eight rebounds and had three assists.

"We've had an incredible "learning experience" over the last few weeks" stated Head Coach Burt Paddock. "Our kids just keep giving, fighting, and pulling for one another. Incredibly happy for them and can't wait to see how we grow and play the rest of the season!! I am very fortunate to coach such a high character group of young people".
 
UP NEXT
Davenport will be on the road for their next couple games. On Thursday DU travels to Purdue University-Northwest, and then goes across town to take on rival Grand Valley State on Saturday.
