TIFFIN, Ohio - The Panther baseball team navigated a split on Saturday at Tiffin winning game one (4-2) before falling in game two (5-1). The first contest was highlighted by the third straight 10-plus strikeout outing by junior
Grant Wolfram. Wolfram struck out 11 in seven innings and did not allow a run until the bottom of the seventh. In game two, Davenport could not solve Michael Boswell with six hits and just one run in the third inning. The Panthers kicked it around in the fifth inning as four unearned runs were scored.
Game 1
Wolfram improved to 4-3 and won his third straight start. His command was on with just one walk surrendered. He took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh when things got interesting. He plunked a batter and then gave up a single to Kyle Vance. With two outs, Kyle Lento singled up the middle to load the bases. The lone walk came with the bases loaded as Brayden Callihan was given the easy RBI. Zach Campbell then singled towards the pitcher moving runners up one base and making it 4-2. Wolfram then focused in and got John Heckman to ground out to first to end the game.
Davenport scored once in the first as
Zac Wilson had a RBI on a fielder's choice. In the fourth inning, DU took a 2-0 lead as
Alex Huard had a two-out single which scored
Jacob Buchberger. Huard came through again in the sixth as
Anthony DiPonio singled with two outs and Huard homered down the left field line, his second of the season.
Austin Petravicius went 2-for-4 with his 17th double of the season, which is three shy of tying the single-season school record.
Game 2
Andrew Click took his first loss of the season (4-1) but his defense behind him committed four errors. Two costly errors in the fifth inning led to four unearned runs and broke a 1-1 tie. Jack Dennis delivered a bases-clearing double for three RBI in the fifth as the biggest hit of the game.
Michael Boswell picked up his second win of the season for the Dragons. He tossed seven innings and allowed no earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Click finished with 4.1 innings and four hits allowed. He walked three and struck out seven, one shy of his career high.
Wilson recorded his 200th career hit on an infield single in the third inning, which also produced DU's only RBI of the game.
Nolan Bryant collected a double in four at-bats.
The two teams will conclude their four-game set tomorrow at noon.
