Panthers renew rivalry with Cornerstone

The Golden Eagles snapped DU's 14-game win streak over them in 11-2 fashion

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Panther baseball team dropped their first night game (5-1) of the season on Tuesday night in non-conference action against nearby Cornerstone University. The Golden Eagles (23-22) snapped a 14-game win streak by the Panthers (22-17) with an 11-2 victory in a matchup against former NAIA and Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference rivals.

Cornerstone led 2-0 after their first at-bat against Davenport starter Sam Traver. Former Panther and current Golden Eagle Dustin DeBeau had a two-run single up the middle in the first to opening the scoring. Cornerstone added three runs in the top of the fourth, all charged to Traver who exited with one out in the inning.

Davenport chipped into the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Hill relieved starter Jon Martin who tossed three innings of one-hit ball with two walks. Brian Sobieski singled to start the inning and Connor Zuidema pinch ran. Oscar Heredia then had a two-out RBI double down the right field line to score Zuidema. Jimmy Filipski then singled up the middle scoring Heredia.

The Golden Eagles added two runs in the top of the sixth to increase their lead to 7-2. Aaron Krupansky and Jarod Burton had RBI singles in the inning. Evan Maize yielded the runs in the sixth and finished with 2.2 innings with three strikeouts. Just one of the runs in the sixth were earned.

Pete Zeimis entered in the seventh and gave up an unearned run. Davenport struggled on defense with five errors, matching a season-high. Trevor Russo did not fare much better going the final two innings and gave up three earned runs in the ninth inning. Traver took the loss (0-3) allowing nine hits and four earned runs with a walk and strikeout.

The top four hitters for Cornerstone went 11-for-22 with six runs and seven RBI. Brady Eeles collected three hits in six at-bats including his third triple of the season. Burton drove in a team-high three runs and hit his fourth homer of the season in the ninth. Adam Harvey went 3-for-4 with a walk and had his second double of the season.

Jake O'Donovan had a pinch-hit double for Davenport, his first two-bagger of the season. Sobieski finished 3-for-4 giving him his fourth three-hit game of the season. Heredia went 2-for-4 and his double was the seventh of the season. Filipski's RBI was his first since April 9. Alex Huard went 1-for-2 with two walks and stole two bases giving him eight this season.

The Panthers concluded their non-conference slate with a 10-9 record and are now 6-4 at home in 2018. It is a quick turnaround and Davenport will need a short memory as they gear up for a pivotal GLIAC four-game series against Ashland beginning on Thursday. The two teams will get things going at 5 p.m. in a nine-inning game. Ashland sits second (13-7) while Davenport is one game back in third (12-8).
