Petravicius sizzles in 13-4 win over Ashland

The Panthers won series opener behind 16 hits, including four by Petravicius

CALEDONIA, Mich. - It was a series opening runaway by the Davenport baseball team on Thursday as they beat Ashland 13-4 to pull into a second place tie in the GLIAC standings. Both teams are now 13-8 and will battle it out again tomorrow in a doubleheader.

Davenport too full advantage of an abnormally poor defensive game by the Eagles. Ashland had a season-high seven errors which led to six unearned runs on the day. The Eagles led 2-0 after Micah Allen delivered a two-out, two-run single to left in the first. DU answered with three runs in the bottom of the first as Ashland made three errors. Jacob Buchberger had the only RBI in the inning on a sacrifice fly to right. Vince Vanata playing in center field had two errors in the inning allowing runs to score.

Justin Palmbos calmed down after the first inning for the Panthers and tossed six straight scoreless innings to get the win. Ashland threatened in the second inning after the first two batters reached, but a strikeout and fly out to center ended the inning. Davenport scored twice in the third inning courtesy of a line drive homer down the right field line by Austin Petravicius. The senior outfielder hit his second of the season and he ended up finishing 4-for-4 just a double short of cycle which he couldn't get in his last two at-bats.

Davenport added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to add to their lead (7-2). Palmbos finished his outing in the seventh inning and was visibly pumped up after stranding two on base after a groundout by Allen. He allowed six hits and two walks but fanned nine in a quality start. His counterpart Chris Slavik took the loss going six innings and allowing 12 hits and seven earned runs. Palmbos now leads the team with five wins this season.

The game was blown open in the bottom of the seventh as DU scored six runs. Three errors in the inning opened the floodgates as Sam Rice relieved Slavik and gave up three unearned runs. Anthony DiPonio batted leadoff for the first time this season going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Jimmy Filipski came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with his fourth double of the season and a RBI. Austin Lansky went 2-for-3 with two walks and a RBI. Alex Huard batted ninth going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.
