Wolfram no-hitter highlights sweep of Ashland

The junior pitcher struck out a DU record 13 batters in game one

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport pitching duo of Grant Wolfram and Andrew Click provided a formidable one-two punch on Friday in a doubleheader sweep of Ashland. Wolfram threw the program's first no-hitter since March 24, 2012 in a 6-0 win in game one, while Click held the Eagles to one hit through the first six innings in a 7-2 win in game two. Wolfram allowed just two base runners in game one with a first-inning walk and he hit a batter in the third inning. He retired the final 13 batters he faced and also set a school record with 13 strikeouts. He fanned the side in the seventh to set the record and struck out eight in the final four innings. Wolfram needed just 95 pitches to reach the milestone and hit the strike zone with 65 pitches.

Reigning GLIAC Pitcher of the Week Devin Peters of Ashland was touched up for six runs (four earned) on 12 hits. He walked two and struck out four throwing 98 pitches (69 strikes). Davenport scored twice in the first and added four more runs in the third to complete the scoring. The Panthers started with three straight singles in the first inning. Anthony DiPonio and Nolan Bryant were standing on first and third when Zac Wilson hit a one-hopper line drive off the glove of Peters for an RBI single. Bryant advanced to third after a double play and Jacob Buchberger singled him home on a sharp drive that the third baseman knocked down, but couldn't grab the ball to make a play.

In the third inning, Brian Sobieski singled and Buchberger doubled down the right field line to set up runners in scoring position. Austin Petravicius got his sixth straight hit to start the series with a double down the third base line which hit the bag and allowed two runs to score for a 4-0 lead. Alex Huard later had a RBI groundout and DiPonio singled through the left side to score Austin Lansky with an unearned run after he reached on an error.

Petravicius went 3-for-3 giving him seven straight hits in two games after going 4-for-4 yesterday. DiPonio had a hit in his first three at-bats. Wilson also went 2-for-3 with a walk.

Click gave up a one-out double in the second inning of game two but that was it until the seventh inning when DU had built a 7-0 lead. He improved to 5-1 this season with the win allowing two walks and striking out six Eagles. Chance Hitchcock took the loss going six innings and allowing nine hits. Ashland gave up five unearned runs in game two.

DiPonio tripled and scored on a passed ball in the first for a 1-0 lead. Petravicius made it eight straight hits to lead off the second inning with a solo homer to left. It was his third long ball of the season. The game remained tight until the bottom of the sixth when DU scored five times to take a 7-0 lead. All five runs were scored with two outs and after two errors allowed runs to reach base. Brent Showers had a RBI single and Nolan Bryant had a big two-run single through the right side. Bryant then stole second and DiPonio looked to be thrown out at home but the catcher could not make the catch on a throw from second base. The ball got away and Bryant raced all the way from second on the throw to score the seventh run. Michael Rogers broke the scoreless drought by Ashland with a two-run double to left center in the top of the seventh.

These two teams will conclude their four-game set tomorrow at 1 p.m. It is the final home game and senior day for the Panthers. DU will celebrate the accomplishments of 14 seniors at the conclusion of the nine-inning game with the Eagles. DU will be looking for their first four-game sweep in the GLIAC.
