Panthers fall in conference opener to Ashland University

ASHLAND, Ohio. – Davenport got off to the start they wanted, winning the first set and taking an early lead on the road. However, following the first set victory the Eagles of Ashland University won three straight sets for the match win. The Panthers had two players with 20 or more digs on the night and couldn't pull out the wins in close sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-SET SCORES: 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 26-28
-Davenport stepped up when they needed to during a road match in the first. The Panthers were down late, 19-20, when DU scored three straight points to give them a 22-20 lead. Down the stretch, Davenport scored six out of the final eight points.
-The Eagles went on a run early in the set, scoring five consecutive points to lead 1-5. Ashland took over the set when they scored four unanswered to take a 16-12 lead. After the short run the Eagles maintained their lead throughout for the victory.
-Ashland got off to an even better start in set three compared to set two. The Eagles scored five straight to take a 10-3 lead. Davenport clawed back and tied the set 12-12. The set remained close down the stretch. With the set tied 22-22 the Eagles scored three of the final four to take a 2-1 lead.
-The Panthers had the first big run of the final set, scoring six of eight points to build a 9-7 advantage. The two teams traded a couple points back and forth before the set was tied at 23-24 and 25-25. The Panthers came within one point of forcing a fifth set. The score was 26-25 in the Panthers favor before the Eagles rallied off three points to take the set and match win.
