MIDLAND, Mich. - The Davenport women's basketball team tried to make a valiant comeback on Thursday night at Northwood. The Panthers trailed 56-36 after three quarters but outscored the Timberwolves 26-14 in the fourth quarter. Davenport (4-10, 2-5 GLIAC) cut the deficit to 66-60 with 46 seconds left in the game which was the closest they had been since 23-17 at the 8:21 mark of the second quarter. Ellie Taylor scored four straight points at the foul line to end the game for Northwood (7-8, 4-3 GLIAC) and give them the 70-62 win. Taylor finished with a game-high 30 points which was also her career-high. She went 8-of-12 from the floor (4-7 3-pt's) and 10-of-11 at the free throw line.
Davenport led for just a total of 32 seconds after scoring the first basket of the game. The Timberwolves then went on an 11-0 run capped off by a triple by Taylor who scored seven of those points. The lead grew to 18-7 at the 3:16 mark of the first quarter on another Taylor long-range shot. Davenport trailed 20-13 at the end of the first quarter shooting 4-of-13 from the floor, while Northwood went 9-of-19.
DU had their lowest scoring quarter of the game in the second with 10 points and trailed 37-23 at halftime. All 10 points scored in the quarter came in the paint. Davenport down 20 heading into the final quarter trimmed the lead down to 59-49 in the first 4:15 of the quarter. Merz scored six points for the Panthers during that time span.
Toni Grace led the team with 15 points scoring seven points in the fourth quarter. Merz finished with 14 points going 5-of-5 from the floor and also had five assists and three steals.
Jenna Falkenberg added 14 points, five rebounds and a season-high five blocked shots. She is the all-time leader in school history with 128 rejections.
