Rhynold's Shutout Helps Panthers Keep the Good Luck Duck

Two goals were all the Panthers would need on Friday night.

ROCHESTER, Mich – After a tough loss at home the night before, the D1 hockey team looked to split the weekend with GLCHL rival Oakland on the road Friday night, and keep a hold on the Good Luck Duck.

In another low-scoring, defensive struggle, the Panthers were able to get scoring when they needed to, including Colton Crabtree's first goal of his collegiate career. Jason Rhynold was unbeatable in net, and along with the rest of the Panthers' efforts, were able to pick up the win. Most importantly, they kept the Duck.

QUICK STATS

Final Score: Davenport 2 – Oakland 0
Power Play: DU (0/2) | OU (0/2)
Records: #6 DU (6-5) | #24 OU (10-3-2)

GRABBING THE LEAD

Early on in the first period, it was clear that it was going to be tough for either team score for the second night in a row. Yet, it would be Davenport striking first. After a Pat Modaff point shot was stopped by Oakland's Joshua Pack, Jason Cohan was in the right place and the right time to bang in his fifth goal of the season.

FIRST FOR SOME

After scoring first in the game on Thursday, DU knew their 1-0 lead was not safe, so they would continue to apply pressure in the Oakland end in period two. Late in the frame, after Pack failed to get control of a loose puck in front of the net, Crabtree jammed home his first as a Panther to put the Panthers up by two.

SHUTTING THE DOOR

Now with a two-goal lead, Davenport knew they needed to bunker down and hold on for the win. When the DU defense allowed any Oakland chance, Rhynold was up to the task. His play throughout the entire game would lead him to his first shutout of the season, and the 2-0 win over the Grizzlies.

WHO'S NEXT?

The Panthers stick to their GLCHL schedule as they travel east to take on Eastern Michigan next Thursday. The Eagles are 4-11 this season, and are coming a loss at the hands of the #1 Adrian Bulldogs. The Panthers are 28-0-1 all-time against the Eagles, with their lone loss coming as an overtime defeat back in the 2-14-15 season.

Game one of the weekend set will be on Thursday at the Ice Cube in Ann Arbor. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m.
