Two power play goals from Ian Thompson helped DU pick up their third straight win

Written by Tyler Kuehl

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After beating Eastern Michigan by their largest margin of victory this season, the D1 hockey team took on the Eagles to complete the weekend set Saturday back at Patterson. The Eagles were still looking for their first win against the Panthers in almost five years.

Davenport took care of business throughout the contest. They controlled the play and put a lot of shots on Eastern Michigan's Aaron Callan. With three goals in the first period, the Panthers were able to coast to their third straight win.

(CRAB)BING THE LEAD

The Panthers picked up where they left off on Thursday early in the first period. Just a few minutes in, freshman Colton Crabtree picked up his second goal in three games, giving the Panthers the 1-0 lead. A little over five minutes later, Chris Corgan would find the back of the net for his third goal in two games to put DU up by two. In the dying minutes of the opening frame, captain Ian Thompson scored his seventh goal of the season, on the power play, to send the Panthers into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.

CRUISING TO THE WIN

Hunter Soden put the Eagles on the board just a couple minutes into the second period with his first of the season, but after that it was all DU.

Just passed the six-minute mark of the second period, Brad Reitter potted his first of the season with assists coming from Goudelock and Jake Pobur. Later on in the period, Ian Thompson would score his second power play goal of the game to put the Panthers up by four heading into third period.

Neirynck scored his second goal of the season early in the third period, capping off an impressive weekend for the DU offense, and sent the Panthers on their way to the 6-1 win.

WHO'S NEXT?
