GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -
Chris Rollins scored two of his team-high 22 points when it mattered most as he took the ball the length of court for a layup to tie the game up, 69-69, with just over one second remaining in regulation. In the overtime period, Davenport outscored Rockhurst, 16-10, and made nine free throws (9-for-12) to the Hawks two (2-for-2) to win the 2019-20 home opener, 85-79.
Rollins stuffed the stat sheet as he finished with 22 points (7-of-11 FG, 2-of-2 3FG and 6-of-10 FT) to go with five assists, three rebounds and three steals in 35 minutes of action. Also scoring in double-figures for Davenport were
Evan Hines (15),
Robbie Bramhill (14) and
Tafari Beckford (12). Beckford also brought down a team-high six rebounds while
Evan Hines converted on four three-point looks.
In a highly competitive game that saw a combined 10 ties and 15 lead changes, Davenport led it by as many as seven on four different occasions, including three in the second half alone. On the other side, Rockhurst's biggest lead of the game was six, but only five in the second half including 66-61 with just over two minutes to play.
Once the Hawks went up five for the final time of regulation, the Panthers ended the period with an 8-3 run capped by Rollins' full-court layup to tie the game and send it into overtime. In the extra frame, free throws were the name of the game as the home team was able to put the game on ice and improve to 2-1 on the young season.
Breaking down the box score, neither team was able to get in a rhythm offensively in the second half. In those 20 minutes, both teams shot just 33 percent from the field including 7-for-21 for Rockhurst and 9-for-27 for Davenport. Despite that, the Panthers were able to do just enough late in regulation to get the game into overtime. Davenport's bench came up big once again as it outscored Rockhurst's 41-14. The Panthers also had a severe advantage in fast-break points with 20 to the Hawks' nine.
Next up, Davenport will host William Jewell on Saturday in day two of the GLIAC/GLVC crossover. Tip against the Cardinals is set for 2 p.m. inside the DU Student Center.
