GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Playing each other for the first time since the 2017 WHAC Tournament semifinals, Davenport and Aquinas renewed their rivalry inside the Student Center on Tuesday night. The Panthers led by just two at the break, 34-32, before outscoring the Saints 41-26 in the second half en route to a 17-point victory, 75-58.
Davenport improved to 8-4 overall, 7-2 at home and evened up the all-time series with Aquinas, 18-18. On the other side, this game was an exhibition for the Saints so their overall record stays put at 4-10.
Evan Hines led all scorers with 19 points and has scored 19 or more in four of his last six games to take over the team lead with 13.7 points per game. Also scoring in double-figures for the Panthers on Tuesday were
Tafari Beckford and
Janeau Joubert, each with 11. Beckford and
Chris Pearl tied for the squad lead in rebounds with seven apiece while
Chris Rollins dished out five assists to go with two steals and a block.
Alonzo Chatman also had one stuff and two steals.
The Saints took their first and only lead of the night at 3-2 before one of the game's two ties at 5-5. The Panthers then embarked on a 16-5 run that lasted nearly six and a half minutes and gave them their biggest lead of the first half at 11, 21-10. Davenport would lead by that many three more times in the first with the final occasion coming at 27-16 with 7:26 to play until the intermission. From there until the end of the half, the Saints outscored the Panthers by 16-7 to make it a two-point halftime margin.
The game's second tie came at 37-37 before the home team reeled off a 25-5 run (lasted 9:26) to go up by 23, 62-39, with just under 10 minutes to go. The Panthers' largest lead was 25 and came at the 5:16 mark when it was 71-46. After that, the Saints could never get closer than 17 points and that was in the final score.
Next up, Davenport will play its final nonconference game of the regular season when it travels to Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday for a 3 p.m. (ET) tip.
