GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport ended the first half on an 8-0 run to pull even with Parkside (45-45) on Saturday before the Rangers outscored the Panthers, 43-34, in the second half to win it, 88-79. The defeat marked Davenport's first regular season home loss since Dec. 8 of last season against No. 19 Ashland (15 straight).
Evan Hines torched the nets for 18 points in the first half alone before finishing with a new career high of 23, one more point than his previous personal best while playing at Minnesota State-Moorhead. Hines is now first on the team in points per game with 13.1. Also scoring in double-figures for Davenport on Saturday were
Chris Rollins with 18 and
Jarrin Randall with 11.
Zach Pangborn and
Chris Pearl each notched seven rebounds while
Tafari Beckford and
Robbie Bramhill paced the Panthers with four assists apiece. Pangborn also led the squad in steals with two.
Parkside set the tone early as it scored 11 of the first 13 points and went ahead by as many as 10, 14-4. Davenport then scored 16 of the next 22 points to tie it up for the first time, 20-20, with just under 12 minutes to play in the half. Following three more ties and four lead changes, the halftime buzzer had sounded and the score was knotted up at 45-45.
Out of the intermission, the Panthers' third and final lead would come with a Randall jumper at the 13:17 mark to make it 57-56. The Rangers responded to that bucket with a 16-3 spurt of their own to take their biggest lead of the day at 12, 72-60. After that, the home team could never get closer than seven before the final nine-point margin.
Next up on the schedule, Davenport will host Great Lakes Christian on Tuesday with the opening tip set for 7 p.m.
