Davenport splits 1-1 against UMSL and Saint Rose

CLERMONT, Fla. – Davenport played two of their final four games of the NTC Spring Games and had two different results. The Panthers had another close lose in game one, falling 5-4 to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and then beat the College of Saint Rose 11-2 in only six innings. Davenport has a chance to finish the NTC Spring Games with a winning record if they win both games on Friday, March 1.

The first inning of play was loaded with scoring for both teams. The Tritons opened the top of the first with a pair of runs, taking an early lead. Davenport responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, taking a 3-2 lead. Flores singled to right center, scoring Palazzolo, and then Merice singled through the right side, scoring Flores and Kalina. Davenport scored another run in the fourth, Crawford singled to left center and Koza scored on the play. The Panthers entered the bottom of the seventh needing a run, down 5-4, in order to force extra innings. Davenport popped out and then struck out twice to end the game.

The offense was in abundance for Davenport against the Golden Knights of Saint Rose. Davenport scored three runs in the third, one in the fourth, another three in the fifth, and finished with four in the sixth inning. In the third inning Crawford opened the scoring with a single up the middle, scoring Palazzolo and Koza. Later in the inning, Flores hit a sac fly to left field, scoring Crawford to give DU a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, French double to center field, scoring Cura. During the fifth inning, Griffin hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Pauley. The second run of the inning came from Flores, who scored off a Cura single to center field. The final run of the fifth came from Cura, who scored off a fielding error by the second base man. Davenport poured in four runs during the sixth inning. Flores kicked off the scoring, hitting a single up the middle that scored Crawford. Shortly after, Merice singled to center field and Kalina scored from third. Davenport ended the sixth with two doubles. Cura hit the first double to left center, scoring Merice, and then Hutchison doubled to center field, scoring Griffin.

Davenport wraps up the NTC Spring Games with a doubleheader on Friday, March 1. The Panthers will face Saint Anselm College at 11:45 am and then Cedarville at 2 pm.
