Panthers get series win over Wayne State in shutout fashion

DU blanked the Warriors for the first time this season in 3-0 victory

CALEDONIA, Mich. - The Davenport baseball team finished off a weekend series win over Wayne State on Sunday with a 3-0 win. It was the first time the Warriors were shut out this season and moved the Panthers to 10 games over .500 at 26-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Evan Marquardt had his final home start as a senior and made the most of it. The Warriors threatened in the first inning as they loaded the bases with one out. Hunter DeLanoy then struck out on a full count pitch for the second out and Tristen Jorah flew out to center to end the inning. Marquardt then pitched into the eighth inning before leaving after a one-out single. Pete Zeimis came in and shut the door for the combined shutout. He retired all five batters he faced with three strikeouts to earn his fourth save of the season.

Marquardt finished by scattering eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. He threw 111 pitches with 74 strikes improving to 7-1. Jack Schmidt went the first six innings and took the loss (1-1) for Wayne State. He allowed seven hits and three runs which all came in the sixth. He walked one and fanned four Panthers. Josh Nelson finished up with two innings and allowed three hits with a walk and strikeout.

Davenport scored their runs in the sixth courtesy of Nolan Bryant with a one-out double down the right field line. Hunter Ruhstorfer scored on the play and reached on a leadoff single to left. Travis Harvey had a two-out RBI single up the middle for the 2-0 lead. He took second on a passed ball and scored on Kamrin Markwardt's RBI single through the left side.

Dylan Watson went 3-for-3 on the day. Markwardt went 2-for-4 as the other Panther with multiple hits. Jacob Buchberger, Bryant and Noah Marcoux each had a double and those were the only extra-base hits for either team.
