Filipski delivers winning RBI in 4-3 victory at Parkside

Kamrin Markwardt went 2-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Davenport baseball team played a night game for just the fifth time this season and improved to 4-1 with a 4-3 win at Parkside on Friday. The teams played at Carthage College due to poor field conditions at Simmons Field. The Panthers felt right at home on the turf, but needed a late RBI single by Jimmy Filipski to pull out the one-run win. The Panthers improved to 4-6 in one-run games this season and are now 27-16 overall and 13-11 in the GLIAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Davenport scored first for the 27th time and are 20-7 when they do with two runs in the top of the first. Alex Huard led off with a double and with two outs came home on a RBI single by Travis Harvey. Kamrin Markwardt followed on a 2-2 pitch with a RBI double to left center for the 2-0 lead.

Parkside would cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Kurt Mlachnik led off with a double and was moved to third by a Casey Oliver bunt. Justin Bennett drove him home with a single up the middle. Max Swan got his sixth start of the season but only went two innings.

Parkside tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. Evan Maize was now on the mound for the Panthers and gave up a one-out double to Oliver. He then took third on a wild pitch and scored on a Ryan Hollander single up the middle with two outs.

The Rangers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth and it all started with two outs. Oliver singled up the middle and Bennett snuck a RBI double inside the third base bag. The Panthers tied it up at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Markwardt got a pitch he liked on a 2-1 count and smacked his second home run of the season down the left field line.

The teams remained tied at 3-3 heading into the ninth inning. Jake Macaluso was on the mound for the Rangers having filled in after six strong innings by Jarrett Rossiano. Rossiano gave up three runs and seven hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Macaluso allowed a leadoff single by Harvey who then took second on a wild pitch. The next two batters could not move Harvey, but Jimmy Filipski came through with the game-winning RBI single up the middle just past second base.

Spencer Vainavicz tossed the eighth inning for Davenport and was in line for the win. Pete Zeimis trotted out of the bullpen with a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and kept it for his fifth save. Zeimis allowed a leadoff single by Hunter Weddel but got Niko Diaz swinging, Ricky West to pop out in foul territory and pinch hitter Paul Weise swinging on a full count to end the game.
