Panthers host Lindenwood for homecoming and home opener

Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex

» The Panthers will have their long-awaited home opener on Saturday and will also celebrate homecoming against Lindenwood. This is the first meeting between the schools and Davenport is 3-1 against teams from the Great Lakes Valley Conference. DU has two wins over Quincy and one over McKendree.

» The Panthers picked up a big win at Northern Michigan last Saturday inside the Superior Dome. DU won 21-7 and did not allow points until 1:21 left in the game. NMU came into the game averaging 347 yards of total offense but were limited to 206 by the Panther defense. NMU was a paltry 2-of-15 on third down and punted nine times.

» The Davenport rush defense was once again stingy allowing just 52 yards on 35 carries (1.5 ypr). DU recorded 13 tackles for loss as a team and Malik Hayes had four of those for minus-28 yards and forced a fumble. The Panthers currently rank sixth in NCAA Division II allowing 40.5 yards per game on the ground.

» The defensive numbers don't stop there. DU is ranked as the top defense in Division II allowing 196.5 yards per contest. They also are seventh in tackles per loss as a team and have given up just 27 first downs.

» The offense took their opening possession and scored a touchdown for the second straight week at NMU. The five-play, 78-yard drive was capped off by Michael Catching's three-yard touchdown run and included a 61-yard pass from Deondre Ford to Nate Couturier.

» Catching later in the game scored on a 53-yard touchdown run with 10:19 left to make it 21-0. Catching had the second-longest run in school history and set a career-high with 99 rushing yards on 16 carries.

» The Panther special teams have been very steady through two weeks. They are 12th nationally in kickoff returns (27.0) and allow just 17.8 yards per return. Chris Ahmed is 2-of-2 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points. Kyle Wojahn in his first season is averaging 37.5 yards per punt and seven of his 12 punts have been a fair catch.

» Deion Powers led the defense with nine tackles and broke up two passes against the Wildcats. Hayes finished with seven tackles. Robert Clanton recorded two sacks for minus-10 yards and had a total of six tackles. Clanton ranks third nationally in sacks with 3.5 through two games. He also has five tackles for loss.

» Last season's home opener was a defensive slugfest against Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Davenport pulled out the 7-3 win and scored that touchdown in the second quarter. Haiden Majewski with a seven-yard rushing score capped off a nine-play, 85-yard drive with 2:51 left until halftime. Peyton Peterson drilled a 37-yard field goal with 14:10 left in the game for the Titans. Oshkosh misfired on fourth-and-10 at the DU 34 with 5:47 remaining and did not have another real chance at scoring. The final drive saw Chad Hill intercept a pass at the DU 25 on the game's final play.

» Lindenwood comes into the contest with a 1-2 record but that is very deceiving. The Lions opened the season at FCS Eastern Washington and lost 59-31. EWU advanced to the national championship game a year ago before falling 38-24 to perenial power North Dakota State. The Lions got within 45-31 in the third quarter before the Eagles scored the final two touchdowns to open up a bigger lead. Cade Brister fired four touchdown passes and was 27-of-50 for 283 yards. Grady Daniels led the defense with nine tackles. In game two, the Lions fell 28-27 against then No. 16 Midwestern State (Texas) in their home opener. Lindenwood trailed 28-14 late in the third quarter and got within a point with a pair of scores in the fourth quarter. Brister completed a 2-yard touchdown pass with 7:15 to play, but the tying extra point was blocked. The Lions would fumble inside the red zone on their next drive with 31 seconds left and Midwestern State ran out the clock. Lindenwood had 534 total yards of offense in the game compared to 336 for Midwestern State. Last week, the Lions won 28-16 over William Jewell at home.
