Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - With just over 12 and a half minutes left to play inside Bud Cooper Gymnasium on Thursday night, Davenport trailed Lake Superior State by 15, 50-35. The Panthers answered with a 22-9 run that lasted over 10 minutes to pull within two, 59-57, but then missed three game-tying/go-ahead looks and the Lakers put the game on ice with a free throw, 60-57.
Davenport fell to 9-5 overall and 1-3 in GLIAC play while Lake Superior State improved to 6-6 on the season including 3-1 in league action. Next up, the Panthers will host No. 8 Ferris State on Saturday with the opening tip set for 3 p.m. inside the Student Center.
Prior to Davenport taking its final lead of the game at 21-20 with 5:34 remaining in the first half, the opening action had seen a combined seven lead changes. Once the Panthers regained that one-point advantage, the Lakers ended the half with an 11-4 run and led by six, 31-25, heading into the intermission. Out of the break, the closest Davenport could get to Lake Superior State before that 15-point margin of 50-35 was nine (34-25, 36-27, 38-29, and 44-35.
Statistically, Davenport was led by
Evan Hines with 15 points and
Tafari Beckford with 13.
Chris Pearl brought down a team-high six rebounds and notched three steals while
Chris Rollins dished out six assists. Defensively,
Robbie Bramhill tallied the Panthers' one block to go with his nine points. As a team, Davenport shot just 38.3 percent from the field (23-of-60) and 31 percent from behind the arc (9-of-29).
