Northern Michigan Snaps Davenport's Five-Game Winning Streak, 67-58

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Northern Michigan held Davenport to just 58 points, its lowest home output of the season, and the Panthers shot only 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field, their third-worst clip of the winter. The Wildcats entered the week with the second-fewest turnovers in all of Division II (160) and only gave it away five times on Thursday en route to the nine-point decision. The last Davenport opponent to turn it over five times or fewer was Northern Michigan with two back on Feb. 22, 2018.

The Panthers' five-game winning streak was snapped as they fell to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in GLIAC play. The Wildcats won their second game in a row to improve to 9-9 on the season and 6-4 in league action. Davenport will look to start up a new winning streak on Saturday when it hosts Michigan Tech (13-5, 7-3 GLIAC) with the opening tip set for 3 p.m.

Four scorers reached double-figures for Davenport including Chris Rollins (15), Tafari Beckford (11), Evan Hines (10), and Chris Pearl (10). Beckford brought down a game and personal-best 14 rebounds for his fourth career double-double and third in the last five games. Those 14 boards are the most by a Panther since John McCloud had that many on Feb. 17, 2018 against Saginaw Valley State.

In the first half, Davenport led by as many as 10, 16-6, before Northern Michigan scored 10-straight points to tie it up for the first time, 16-16. The Wildcats' first lead came at 18-17 and the Panthers took it back with a Hines layup, but the game would be deadlocked for a second time, 23-23, heading into halftime. Following four more ties and nine more lead changes in the second half, Northern Michigan was ahead by two, 46-44, with 7:20 left to play. That three-pointer by Northern Michigan's Sam Taylor opened up a 16-2 run by the Wildcats that gave them their biggest advantage of the game at 13, 59-46. After that, the closest the Panthers could get was seven, 65-58.
