GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Michigan Tech used a 15-6 run late in the game and out-rebounded Davenport by 15, 43-28, including 13, 33-20, on the defensive glass, to hand the Panthers their second-straight loss, 69-61. That marks the first time Davenport has dropped back-to-back home games since 2017-18, its first season in the GLIAC.
Davenport is now 14-7 overall and 6-5 in GLIAC play while Michigan Tech improved to 14-5 on the season including 8-3 in league action. Next up for the Panthers, they'll be at Parkside on Thursday with the tip set for 8:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. central time) inside the Rangers' DeSimone Gymnasium. There, the Rangers (10-9, 6-5 GLIAC) have gone 9-1 this season.
Three Panthers scored in double-figures including
Tafari Beckford with 16,
Evan Hines with 15 and
Chris Pearl with 10. Their other team leaders included Hines for rebounds with seven while Rollins paced the team in both assists with seven and steals with three. Davenport was without injured senior,
Robbie Bramhill, and played just seven players, five of which were on the court for 27 or more minutes apiece.
Michigan Tech entered this week with the fewest total turnovers in all of Division II and Davenport forced the Huskies to turn it over 18 times, their highest total of the season. The Panthers were able to turn those 18 turnovers into 18 points, but managed just five second-chance points because of the discrepancy on the defensive glass.
There were three ties and three lead changes in the first half, but Michigan Tech used a 21-10 run to go up 11, 32-21, heading into halftime. Out of the intermission, Davenport outscored its opponent by 10, 16-6, to pull within one, 38-37, before eventually tying the game for the final time at 45-45. The Huskies then used that 15-6 run to go up nine, 60-51, and the Panthers could never get closer than four, 60-56, after that.
