DETROIT - The Davenport University men's basketball team turned in another stellar defensive effort on Thursday night, this time at Wayne State. The Panthers defeated the Warriors 73-65, scored 21 points on 10 takeaways and held the home team to just 26.1 percent (6-for-23) shooting from behind the arc.
Davenport improved to 11-5 on the season including 3-3 in GLIAC play and has won four of its last five games. On the other side, Wayne State dropped to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in league action with its third-consecutive loss. Next up for the Panthers, they'll be at Ashland (7-7, 0-6 GLIAC) on Saturday with the opening tip set for 3 p.m.
Thursday at Wayne State, Davenport was led by a trio of players that scored in double-figures including both
Janeau Joubert and
Chris Rollins with 17 points apiece along with
Tafari Beckford's 11. Beckford also tied the game high in rebounds with 10 for his second double-double of the season and first since the season-opening win over USC Aiken (19 points, 11 rebounds). Joubert stuffed the stat sheet as he added to those 17 points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Rollins was the team's ringleader in assists with six.
Wayne State led by as many as seven in the early going as it scored nine of the game's first 11 points. Davenport then answered that opening spurt with an 11-4 run of its own to tie the game for a second time at 13-13. Six of those 11 points came on a pair of three-pointers from
Evan Hines. Following four more lead changes and two more ties, the score was deadlocked at 22-22 before the Panthers scored 13 of the next 15 points to go up by 11, 35-24. The visitors carried that momentum into the locker room and led by eight, 39-31, at the break.
In the second half, Davenport widened its lead to as many as 14 at both 58-44 and 60-46. Once it was 60-46, Wayne State battled back to within one, 62-61, at the 4:55 mark with a 15-2 run. From there until the end of the game, though, the Panthers outscored the Warriors by seven, 11-4, and sealed their second true-road victory of the season.
