Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Stays Hot, Runs Winning Streak to Five

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Just like Thursday, the Davenport University softball team won game one with a blowout followed by a nail-biting victory in the nightcap. Friday afternoon, the Panthers crushed USciences, 17-0, in five innings before escaping game two with an 11-10 win over Concordia (N.Y.) to run their winning streak to five.

Davenport is above the .500 mark for the first time this season at 6-5 and has scored a combined 54 runs in those last five games. During that span, the Panthers have outscored their opponents 54-24 while hitting a red-hot .364 (56-for-154). Next up on the schedule, Davenport will finish its stay in Florida on Saturday with Findlay at 9 a.m. followed by Western Oregon at 11:15 a.m.

Game 1: Davenport 17, USciences 0 (5 inn.)
Sixteen different Panthers came to the plate in the win, 11 of them scored at least one run and 10 of those 16 registered at least one hit. Gabby Palazzolo, Rachel Griffin and Hayley O'Mara each had a multi-hit game while Palazzolo, Selene Pauley, Griffin, Briana Allen, and Monica Meger each scored more than once.

In the circle, Hayley Kreiger (1-0) got the start for her first appearance of the season. Kreiger pitched the shutout with just four hits allowed, not a single walk and three strikeouts on 79 pitches.

Game 2: Davenport 11, Concordia (N.Y.) 10
Concordia's offense started the game with a two spot before Davenport responded with six runs of its own in the home half of the first inning. The score would stay like that for two full frames before the Clippers scored six more runs in the top of the fourth to go up by two, 8-6. The Panthers had an answer again, though, as they answered with four runs in the bottom of that inning followed by another in the fifth to take a three-run lead, 11-8. Concordia brought home two more runs in the sixth and had the bases loaded in the seventh before Davenport was able to escape.

Individually, seven different Panthers had at least one base knock including three from Kennedy Crawford as well as two from both Palazzolo and O'Mara. Eight different players touched home for Davenport while Pauley, Brooke Cowan and Allen each did so multiple times.

Taylor Simon (2-2) picked up the win after five and two-thirds innings of work before Ellie Muilenburg earned her second-career save with an inning and a third of shutout ball.
