Softball Splits Final Day in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Davenport University softball team played its final two games of the Florida trip on Saturday as it took on Findlay out of the Grat Midwest Athletic Conference and Western Oregon from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Panthers were shutout by the Oilers, 2-0, before walking it off against the Wolves, 4-3.

After a 6-4 trip to The Sunshine State for spring break, Davenport comes back home with an overall record of 7-6. Next up, the Panthers will head to the Midwest to face Maryville on Saturday and McKendree on Sunday, both of which play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Game 1: Findlay 2, Davenport 0
Findlay's Caragyn Yanek surrendered just one hit, a slow roller to third off the bat of Brooke Cowan with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Ellie Muilenburg (3-3) suffered the loss for Davenport after giving up a two-run home run in the first with two walks, eight strikeouts and six hits allowed. Those eight punchouts tie Muilenburg's career high that she set in the season opener against Missouri S&T.

Game 2, Davenport 4, Western Oregon 3
Rachel Griffin got Davenport on the board with her seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center in the bottom of the first. Griffin hit five home runs in 10 games during the Florida trip and the junior is ranked first in the GLIAC for both home runs and RBI (20).

Western Oregon answered with a run in the third, fourth and fifth frames to take a one-run lead, 3-2, before Alexa Flores' fireworks in the bottom of the seventh. The first two Panthers to come to the plate were retired before Selene Pauley singled to center field and Flores sent everybody home with a two-run blast to right center, her first home run of the season.

Taylor Simon turned in one of her better outings of the year with four innings pitched, three earned runs given up on seven hits, no walks, and two strikeouts on 55 pitches. In relief, Emma Miller made an appearance for the first time since Feb. 24 at Tampa and was brilliant. Miller (1-1) threw three shutout innings on only two hits without a single free pass.
