GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport ACHA D1 men's hockey team is winding down the regular season and there is still a lot to be decided. On Friday night, the Panthers tussled with crosstown rival Calvin University in a home-and-home series that will decide who is second place and the second seed in the upcoming GLCHL Tournament. DU came away with a 3-1 win on foreign ice at Eagles Ice Center to improve to 17-11 overall and snap a five-game losing streak. It was also the sixth straight game against a nationally-ranked opponent. Calvin is ranked No. 16 in ACHA Division I.
HOW IT HAPPENED
This contest took a while to feel each other out. Calvin is a much-improved squad from a year ago and are now 16-7-2 in 2019-20. CU was 9-20 during the 2018-19 campaign. Neither team could find the back of the net until late in the second period. Also, both team were playing disciplined hockey with no penalties until the 14:48 mark of the second period.
Jason Cohan scored at 17:48 of the second period just after DU killed off the game's first penalty.
Chris Corgan assisted on the goal. The scoring and penalties increased in the third period as tensions rose. There was a total of 56 penalty minutes in the final period. A majority of those were 10-minute misconducts at 16:51 of the third period.
Adam Goudelock wasted no time early in the third at 1:06 to give Davenport a 2-0 lead. Corgan also assisted on that goal. The Knights climbed back into it on a 5-on-3 opportunity as
Walker Aurand and
Cory Bussing took minor penalties at just three seconds apart. That long 5-on-3 yielded the only goal of the game for Calvin at the 13:10 mark. Austin Huizenga tapped home a pass through the crease on the far post from Riley Robertson and Jacob Siebenga.Â
Davenport had a quick answer at 14:46 from
Nathan Nickelson with an assist from
Frederik Gilsdig. Calvin had one last chance with a power play starting with 56 seconds left but could not find another goal to get closer.
