Panthers tripped up by #15 Colorado Mesa

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Davenport men's lacrosse team played 15th-ranked Colorado Mesa on a neutral field at CSU-Pueblo on Thursday. The Mavericks were the second ranked team in the first four games of the season for the Panthers. CMU outscored DU in each quarter and won 15-7. Davenport is now 0-4 overall and the Mavericks improved to 6-0.

DU found themselves ahead 2-1 in the first quarter on goals from Jordan Caskenette and Keelan McKouen. McKouen scored with the man-up advantage and it was their only goal of that type in two chances. Colorado Mesa on the other hand went 3-for-7 in those same situations including twice in the first quarter.

CMU led 3-2 after 15 minutes and scored first in the second quarter on Cole Emmanuel's first of the game. Avery Buckius cut the deficit to 4-3 at the 13:26 mark and then the Mavericks potted the next two goals less than a minute apart.

Blake Gibson-McDonald scored the last goal of the first half for Davenport at 6:58 and Joe Wulforst IV scored 1:14 later for the final goal of the half assisted by Kyle O'Brien. The Mavericks began to pull away in the third quarter as Holden Evans scored back-to-back times and Jed Brummett also scored at the 11:28 mark for a 10-4 advantage.

Davenport scored the next two goals by Caskenette and Gibson-McDonald to cut the deficit to 10-6. Colorado Mesa put home the game's next four goals extending into the fourth quarter for a 14-6 lead. McKouen's second of the game at 9:09 from Adam Smellie ended the scoring by DU.

Davenport took seven penalties for seven minutes. Logan Conwell had a pair of one-minute violations. Daniel Milano was spectacular in net with a season-high 24 saves. DU was hurt by winning just 6-of-26 in the faceoff circle. Connor Foster had four of those wins. Trent Eichbauer led the team with three ground balls. AJ Switzer led the Mavericks with three goals and one assist. Emmanuel scooped up a game-high 14 ground balls.
