DETROIT - The Davenport University men's basketball team was unable to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit, 43-29, as Wayne State led wire to wire and dropped the Panthers to 0-4 with an 88-75 decision on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei Center.
Scott Ulaneo paced all scorers with a career-high 24 points, Davenport's first 20-point performance of the season, to go with a team-high six rebounds, three assists and a steal. Also scoring in double-figures for the Panthers were
Evan Hines (13),
Chaz Birchfield with a personal-best 11,
Elijah Belle (11), and
Chris Rollins (10). Rollins led the team in both assists and steals with four and two, respectively.
Wayne State struck first with a three-pointer from Darian Owens-White that set the tone for the day. The Warriors led by as many as 15 in the first half, 35-20 and 37-22, while shooting nearly 60 percent (16-of-27) from the field and holding the Panthers to just a 34.5 percent (10-for-29) clip. In the second half, Davenport pulled to within nine, 77-68 and 80-71, but never closer and Wayne State's lead ballooned to as big as 23, 57-34 and 66-43.
Davenport will return home next week to face Purdue Northwest on Friday (5 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m.).
