HAMMOND, Ind. – The Davenport women's basketball team made the trip out of state on Friday night to Purdue Northwest, but the Pride ended up on the winning side of a 74-61 decision. Both teams entered the game with a 1-3 record and the Panthers bid for a second straight win fell short.
The biggest news coming out of this contest was the play of
Emily Lange. She scored a career-high 26 points and bested her previous high by 11 points after scoring 15 against Northwood back on Feb. 13, 2020. Lange was particularly accurate from behind the arc going 5-of-6 and had not made more than two triples in any game during her career. Lange went 9-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-3 at the free throw line. She also had six rebounds to lead the team and had one assist.
The game hinged upon the second quarter which has really plagued the Panthers so far this season. It seems like just one poor quarter shifts momentum. DU was outscored 16-4 in the quarter and found themselves down 36-21 at halftime. The Panthers shot 1-of-13 in the quarter compared to 6-of-10 for the Pride.
The Panthers cut the deficit to single digits in the third quarter at 46-37 on a layup by
Loni Sales at the 4:44 mark. The battled to within 54-48 on a pair of
Scout Nelson free throws at the 1:02 mark and trailed 56-48 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Pride scored the first four points in the final quarter and DU got to within eight points on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter. Purdue Northwest scored 25 points off turnovers and held a 36-12 edge in points in the paint.
Toni Grace scored 16 points including 9-of-9 at the free throw line. She has made all 23 of her free throws this season. Sales added eight points, three rebounds, two steals and a block in 22 minutes.
The Pride got a team-high 21 points from Savaya Brockington who went 8-of-16 from the floor including 4-of-7 behind the arc. Danielle Nennig added 18 points and eight rebounds in 31 minutes. Four different Pride players scored in double figures and they shot 52.7 percent overall as a team.
