MIDLAND, Mich. - The slow start for the women's basketball team dug themselves a major hole on Saturday in an 87-58 road loss at Northwood. The Timberwolves (2-0) opened the game on a 24-0 run before the Panthers put some points on the board at the 1:50 mark of the first quarter on a pair of free throws by freshman
Claire Borsheim. Davenport missed their first 12 shots of the contest and just could not get back into the game.
The Panthers were down 31-2 after 10 minutes but did rise up in the second quarter by outscoring the home team, 26-16. DU trailed 47-28 at halftime. Northwood came out scorching in the first quarter shooting 80 percent. Davenport would shoot 57.1 percent in the second quarter.
In the second half, Davenport was outscored 40-30. The Timberwolves got big contributions off the bench scoring 36 points compared to 11 for the Panthers. NU much like yesterday was dialed in from distance going 10-of-20 beyond the arc.Â
Toni Grace led the Panthers with 15 points which was the 38th time in double figures in her career. Grace shot 6-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-3 at the foul line.
Loni Sales added 11 points going 5-of-10 from the floor but fouled out in 25 minutes.
Scout Nelson added 10 points and four rebounds in 34 minutes.
Davenport (0-2) will be home next week in their home opener against Wayne State on Friday, Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. The Warriors are scheduled to play Lake Superior State on Monday and Tuesday this upcoming week in their first action of the season.
