Football Weekly Preview: Panthers look for consecutive wins hosting Wayne State

DU won 18-13 last Saturday on homecoming against Northern Michigan

10/14/2021 11:58:00 AM

Davenport will be looking to build momentum after last week's 18-13 homecoming win over Northern Michigan as they host Wayne State on Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon at Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia.

OPENING DRIVE
● The Panthers were happy to be back home and it showed as they improved to 5-0 on homecoming with an 18-13 win over Northern Michigan last Saturday. The rematch favored the Panthers who dropped the non-conference game back on Sept. 18 in Marquette. This time around it was a stout defense and ball control by the Davenport offense which led to the team's second win of the season and first in the conference.
● The all-time series is still very early as the Warriors have won two of the three meetings. DU would like to forget the last time these teams met which was a 34-0 loss at home on Nov. 2, 2019. The other two contests were a 37-14 win in Detroit on Oct. 6, 2018 and a 34-27 overtime loss on Nov. 11, 2017 in Caledonia. The 2019 meeting was the last time DU was shut out at home and the third time ever. WSU outgained DU, 315-134, including 175-40 on the ground.
● Wayne State comes into the contest looking for their first win of 2021. The Warriors have been very close however with four of their losses coming by seven points or less. The season opener on Sept. 2 was a 24-21 loss to then No. 5 Slippery Rock. They fell 51-45 in overtime at Missouri S&T back on Sept. 18. The last two weeks have been especially gut-wrenching with a game they led 19-0 at Northern Michigan only to lose 26-19 and last week's 30-27 loss to Michigan Tech as the Huskies drove the final five-plus minutes and kicked the winning field goal as time expired. Myren Harris leads the rushing attack with 511 yards and four touchdowns. Chase Churchill has taken a majority of the snaps under center and is 41-of-94 passing with six touchdowns and two interceptions. Tre Davis leads the receiving corps with 25 catches for 500 yards and four scores. Julius Wilkerson heads up the Warrior defense and leads them with 54 tackles. Brandon Tuck-Hayden ranks second on the team with 42 tackles and leads them with 4.5 tackles for loss.
