Davenport welcomes Northern Michigan on Saturday for a noon kickoff. It is homecoming for the Panthers who have spent the last four weeks on the road.
OPENING DRIVE
● The Panthers will be waking up in their own beds prior to Saturday's contest for the first time in four weeks as they host Northern Michigan in a GLIAC matchup. The Panthers are now primed for a stretch of games in which they play four of their next five games at home.
● These two teams tangled in a non-conference game back on Sept. 18 at the Superior Dome and the Wildcats prevailed in a tight one 20-14. It was an interesting game in that 27 points were scored in the first quarter and then the Wildcats scored the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter.
Deondre Ford had a six-yard rushing touchdown on the game's first drive.
Kyshawn Richards then scored on the team's third drive but that would be it for the Panthers. They gained 149 yards on their two scoring drives and were held to 116 yards on their final eight drives. Drake Davis passed for two scores and ran for another for the Wildcats. He finished with 176 passing yards and 132 rushing yards becoming the first QB to pass for over 150 yards and rush for over 130 yards against a Davenport defense. Tyshon King also carried 15 times for 97 yards for NMU.
● The all-time series is knotted up at two wins apiece heading into Saturday's game. This is the second time that Northern Michigan has traveled to Caledonia. The previous meeting was in 2018 and it was a classic. Davenport won 31-30 in overtime on Sept. 29. Nate Couturier caught a touchdown pass in overtime for DU and Chris Ahmed connected on the extra point for a 31-24 lead. NMU responded with a 13-yard touchdown pass on their possession but elected to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Latrell Giles pass fell incomplete to secure the win for DU.
● Northern Michigan has developed a pattern this season alternating wins and losses. They are 3-2 overall and won their GLIAC opener 26-19 at home last Saturday against winless Wayne State. The ending was as wild as it comes. Trailing 19-0 after a Wayne State touchdown at the 8:22 mark of the third quarter, the Wildcats scored the game's final 26 points. NMU was down 19-8 when Daniel Riser booted a 24-yard field goal with 3:24 left to make it 19-11. WSU muffed the ensuing kickoff and the Wildcats recovered at the 12-yard line. Davis found Isaiah Popp on a six-yard score with 1:59 to play and a two-point conversion tied the game up at 19-19. The Warriors then went three-and-out and punted back to Northern Michigan with 1:19 remaining. On the next play, DJ Stewart exploded for a 50-yard winning touchdown run. Wayne State drove down to the Northern Michigan 13-yard line as time expired.
DAVENPORT NOTEBOOK
●
Amonte Phillips hauled in his first touchdown pass of the season at Michigan Tech. He finished with eight catches for 119 yards becoming the first DU receiver to go over 100 receiving yards in a game this season. He ended the spring season with a three-touchdown performance against Gannon.
● Davenport threw for 232 yards at Michigan Tech which was a season-high eclipsing the 176-yard performance in the season opener against Truman State. DU also went three weeks within a passing touchdown since the season opener against Truman State.
● Davenport has been averaging 150 yards per game rushing over the last four games with a season-high 250 yards on the ground at Walsh. That total was the second-best rushing performance in school history.
● The Michigan Tech game snapped a streak of nine straight games in which the Davenport defense recorded a sack.
●
Brendan Boman currently leads the team with three sacks this season. He also has recorded 18 tackles and force a fumble.
