HAMMOND, Ind. - The Davenport women's basketball team went into overtime for the second time this season before falling 73-65 at Purdue Northwest on Saturday. Both of the overtime games have been on the road and now the Panthers are 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the GLIAC.
The teams played even in the first quarter at 16 apiece and the Pride had a big second quarter to take a 40-29 lead at halftime. The Panthers were not to be deterred as they came out strong in the third quarter outscoring the Pride 19-7 to take a 48-47 lead. Davenport shot 42.9 percent in the quarter and limited the Pride to 2-of-11 from the floor.
The Panthers built a 57-51 lead on a
Lillee Gustafson layup with 6:04 left and it looked promising for their first win of the season. Purdue Northwest kept it close and eventually tied the game at 61 with 35 seconds left.
Toni Grace missed a shot and Purdue Northwest grabbed the rebound with five seconds and called a timeout. The Pride had a shot at the buzzer to win it but missed and the game went into overtime.
Grace nailed a three-pointer at 2:35 to give DU a 64-63 lead in overtime. She then split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 65 with 1:21 on the clock. The Pride split at the line with 1:07 left but got the offensive rebound and was fouled again. Another split at the line made it 67-65 and
Scout Nelson was fouled on the other end but missed both free throws with 1:01 to go. The Pride scored again with 41 seconds to take a 69-65 lead and ended the game on an 8-0 run.
Davenport finished 22-of-62 from the floor including 5-of-19 from behind the arc. The team went to the free throw line 22 times and made 16 for 72.7 percent. The game featured 10 lead changes and seven ties. Grace led the team with 18 points and went 10-of-12 at the free throw line.
Loni Sales finished with 11 points and five assists. Gustafson set a season-high with 13 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double.
Ajai Simmons contributed 12 points as 60 of the team's 65 points came from the starting five.
