LAKELAND, Fla. - The women's basketball team did not have the answer for Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon in a 85-57 setback in the second day of the Mocs Christmas Classic. The Moccasins entered the day with a 3-6 record but played like they were in need of a win against the Panthers on their home court.
Florida Southern led 6-2 at the first media timeout five minutes into the game. Davenport took a brief lead at 9-8 with 2:58 left in the quarter on a triple by
Kenzie Wilkinson. The Moccasins responded with a three of their own and ended the quarter with a 19-9 lead.
The lead grew to 21 with 4:49 left in the first half at 32-11 and the Panthers found themselves down 45-21 at halftime. The teams played even in the third quarter with each scoring 18 points. Florida Southern outscored DU 22-18 in the fourth quarter for the final margin.
Davenport shot 29.4 percent (15-of-51) for the game and made it to the free throw line consistently going 23-of-29. Florida Southern shot 45.7 percent (32-of-70) for the game and were 15-of-16 at the free throw line.
Lillee Gustafson in 24 minutes grabbed seven rebounds to go with four points, two assists, two steals and two blocks. She is the first Panther this season to have multiple blocks in a game.
Toni Grace led the team with 16 points going 9-of-11 at the charity stripe.
Ajai Simmons came off the bench for the first time this season but did have nine points in 17 minutes. Wilkinson had eight points in 20 minutes.
